Pinky Kapoor is one of the few Feng-shui and Vaastu
consultants in the city today. Even thoughboth art forms have gained much popularity
in the country over the past few years, there are perhaps very few people who blend
both in their work.
She is one of the pioneers of this science in this city. Through her weekly articles
in "The Telegraph" more and more people in Kolkata,
Northeast, Jharkand, Ranchi, Jamshedpur and Assam developed a keen interest in the
subject.

Vaastu is an art that originated in India , and Feng-shui, one which originated
in China. This often leads to a great degree of confusion among people who wish
to benefit from one or either. Left to choose between the two, a layman finds himself
at a complete loss. 'Which will benefit me?' is the frequently heard cry from everymouth!
Vaastu is considered the interplay of various forces of nature involving the five
elements of earth, water, wind, fire and ether and strives to maintain equilibrium
as these elements influence, guide and change the living styles of not only human
beings but every living being on earth.
Thus they influence our deeds, luck, behavior and other basics of life. Vastu Shastra
is the sublime elucidation of your surrounding and their influence on your life.
Vastu literally means " house " or Dwelling Place and its principles
establish to create a harmony between the fine elements viz. Earth, Sky, Fire, Water
and Air in the environment.
Pinky Kapoor solves this confusion fantastically and yet, logically. After all both
the art-forms aim at the same goal (conservation and use of cosmic energy). Why
then shall we not blend both these to yield better results? Her clients are delighted
with this new development - finally they get to put to use both Vaastu and Feng-shui
to reap benefits

Vaastu Shastra is an ancient art-form. It is a highly scientific art, bringing together
architecture and spirituality. An inappropriate interior design
of a building can disturb the flow of positive energies that are connected to every
occupant leading to disharmony, imbalance, and an increase in the level of stress
and depression in their lives. Early sages of India laid down several principles
for the construction of buildings that were valuable for the well being of mankind.
Most of these principles were laid down keeping in mind the five great elements,
namely - earth, space, air, fire and water. Each of the five elements of nature
has a predetermined location on the property when taken in totality, then again
inside the entire building, and finally in each room within the building.
Space: The element of space rules the centre of
the property as a whole, the home, the workspace and each individual room. Lord
Brahma, the Hindu god of creation resides here- an area termed the Brahmasthan.
Spiritual energies from all different directions merge here and at the same time
radiate from this particular point in the form of positive vibrations that bless
everyone in the home.
In Vastu, this area is akin to the womb, which retains the embryo, and the navel
which is considered the centre of the human body. We all know that the womb and
the navel are fragile. Similarly the centre of the house or of each room should
be protected and not bear any weight. It should be left clear of any kind of pressure
in the form of stairs, pillar(s), beams or a wall running through it. Keeping the
centre free enables positive vibrations to move freely in every direction.
Air: The element of air rules the northwest sector
of the property, the home, the workspace and each individual room. It is usually
kept for the guests and the marriageable daughters who are not expected to stay
in the house for long. But if the room in this zone is given to a married son, the
strong movement prevailing here does not let the couple grow their roots here, or
settle into a compatible lifestyle witheach other.Soon they get uprooted in their
married lives and opt for a divorce.
Fire: The element of fire rules the southeast sector
of the property, the home, the workspace and each room of the building. Lord Agni
resides here and illuminates its residents with the light of knowledge. This southeast
sector is best used for generators and barbecue grills in the outdoors; and fire
stove, gas,oil or anything electronic in the indoors.
Water: The element of water rules the northeast
sector of the property, home, workspace and each individual room. A spring, well
or borehole with an underground tank when dug in the northeast of the property brings
health and prosperity in abundance to its residents.
Earth: The element of earth rules the southwest
sector of the property, building and each room.
Earth element which is akin to our mother earth mirrors its qualities of strength,
heaviness and steadiness. Its strong gravitational pull helps the occupants to ground
themselves and stabilize well in life and business. For this reason, the room in
the southwest is strongly recommended for the senior most couple in the house or
for the boss in his office.

The ground is considered good if it is level or gently sloping towards north and
east. Such lands bring
about good health and prosperity to its residents. If there is depression in the
south or west it is said to
bring
drainage of health and wealth to its occupants.
Shape of the plot and the building:
A plot that is a perfect square with all the sides meeting at right angles, is generally
considered
to be the best. Second to this is a rectangular plot where the length of the plot
is double its width.
Placement of doors and windows:
It is considered extremely auspicious to have
a threshold at the main entrance door.
The main door should open clockwise into the
house
It should preferably never open to a lift well,
staircase, street lamp post or a big tree.
Try to have access to more number of rooms from
the north and eastern sides.
Doors in all rooms can be of equal size but
the ones in the south and west could be higher than the
doors in the north and east.
Doors should never be placed in the centre of
the wall for any room with the exception of temples
where they should always be in the centre.
Doors should always rest against a wall and
never hang in between.
Main entrance doors of two neighbouring houses
or flats opposite to each other should not
face each other.
The total number of doors in a house should
preferably be an even number like 2, 4, 6 and 8 etc.
Numbers ending in zero however should be avoided.
All the windows in the house should have symmetry
in height.
Staircase
The stairs can be built in the south west or
northwest of the building.
They should never be built in the northeast
because of its weight.
One should rise from north or east.
The stairs should always rise in a clockwise
manner.
Spiral stairs are never recommended.
The staircase should never be built in the centre
of the building.
The steps should be odd numbers like 11, 17,
23 etc.
Basement
Building a basement below the road level of
a house is not advised but if the height of the
basement is designed in such a way that it projects up above
the road level and has windows to
receive solar energy, then these are acceptable.
Basements should cover the entire base area.
Basements built only in the north, east and
northeast are also preferred.
Basements built in the south, southwest and
west are never recommended because they create
depression in the area that gives stability to its residents.
Mezzanine floor:
A projected floor in between two floors known as mezzanine should be built in west,
south
or southwest of the building.
Loft and attic:
These should only be built in the south, west and southwest sectors of the house.
Building height:
The entire building can have equal height everywhere.
Or
North, east and northeast should be lower than the south, west and southwest.
