Feng-shui is an age-old art-form which found its conception in ancient China, the
land of auspicious dragons. These dragons are still believed to breathe their mystical
and magical energy in to the modern world.
It covers just about every aspect of architecture, house designing, including décor
and interior decoration, furnishings and placement of furniture.As the physical
body is said to protect the soul, the home and the workspace protect the physical
body.
This relationship helps us to understand the role Feng Shui may play in our daily
lives- introducing harmony and balance into our personal environment and bringing
an all-round happiness, health, wealth and prosperity.
Once we are aware of this science, we begin to perceive our living environment as
much more than a structure of bricks and cement. We start to wonder as how powerful
is the impact of the invisible life force that surrounds us.

 In hilly areas
mountains and rivers are taken into consideration while constructing the buildings.
Whereas in modern cities, high rise man made buildings are viewed as mountains and
roads and highways as rivers. These are considered as purveyors of chi.
A tall building
behind the house is considered extremely auspicious where the family enjoys exceptional
good protection all through in their house. In contrary, a tall building directly
in front of the house indicates obstacle, hurdles and hindrances all through for
the family residing in it.
It is important
that buildings are not constructed at depressed levels. The roads should be at least
level or lower than the land behind the house. Higher land behind the house gives
it mountainous kind of support.
Buildings should
not be constructed at the end of dead roads. These could be deadly as they work
like arrows, which seem to strike deep at the heart of the house. Similarly
avoid locations where two roads from different directions come and meet at a point
hitting the house directly.
It is not advisable
to construct residential buildings on main roads where energy tends to move too
fast and dissipates the chi energy.
Shapes of the
plot, houses, buildings and factories should be regular.
Square shapes
represent gold and signify luck from heaven.
Rectangle shapes
signify growth and moving upwards.
U, T, triangular,
gun shapes, weird forms and the ones that have wide front and a narrow back or a
narrow front and wide back are all considered inauspicious as they attract bad luck.

All open areas
like gardens, terraces and balconies should be located in north, east and northeast
sides of the property and building. This placement is considered to be extremely
auspicious as the cosmic energy flows into the property from these directions and
brings with it health, wealth and happiness.
All the doors
in a building should open into the rooms and windows outside the rooms.
The main door
should preferably open clockwise into the house or rest against a wall.
Three or more
doors in a row should not be built in a house.
The main door
and the back door should never fall in a straight line.
The main door
of the house should never directly face the bathroom or the kitchen door.
West of the
house is good for a teenager's room as the setting sun in this direction helps young
to
settle well in life.
East of the
house is conducive for a child's room as the rising sun's energy helps the young
kids to grow well.
Rooms in the
south should be designed for a formal drawing room for entertaining guests.
Staircases in
the house should never directly face the main entrance as the energy rolls out of
the house taking away with it health, wealth and prosperity of the residents.
The kitchen
should be in the east or southeast corner of the home. The kitchen here would receive
lot of light flowing from the eastern and southern windows.
The best area
for a master bedroom is the southwest. This region is known for its strength and
stability.
For God's blessings
to flow into the house, the prayer room should be in the northeast sector of the
house. Images of God should be placed on the eastern wall.
To enjoy a healthy
meal with the family, the dining room should be located in the eastern side next
to the kitchen in the southeast.
North of the
house should have a living area, where the entrance to the house or a flat should
be from north or northeast.
Northwest area
ruled by movement is best used for a guest bedroom or for a marriageable daughter.
